Our areas of expertise

EEBIC Ventures focuses on the development of expertise specific to certain sectors – typically Biotech, Medtech and digital start-ups – and market segments, to understand and optimally meet the needs of the various market players (investors, entrepreneurs, financing partners, etc.).

I am convinced that the best way to support a start-up or spin-off is to first invest in it, and then to provide all the necessary support, but always in the capacity of an investor,” says Olivier Belenger, CEO of EEBIC.

University spin-offs

Since 2003, EEBIC has established and managed the Theodorus funds of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. These financing vehicles invest in projects of university spin-offs. Initially dedicated exclusively to spin-offs of the ULB, the funds can now also be allocated to projects of spin-offs from other Belgian universities. Overall, the first four Theodorus funds have already invested over €60m in around 30 projects, including the well-known Bone Therapeutics, Ogeda and MastherCell projects.

Seed capital

In 2016, EEBIC set up the Seeder Fund, a financing vehicle designed to ensure the rapid availability of seed capital for promising and innovative digital projects.    It aims to fill a gap in the Belgian equity market and to develop the most agile methodology possible to provide answers and liquidity at short notice (within 30 days) to project owners, while maintaining the quality of the investments. Since its inception, the Seeder Fund has invested nearly €25m in forty or so projects.

Cross-cutting platforms

In order to diversify its financing sources and strategic advice, EEBIC has also expanded its activity portfolio by participating in the creation of two major cross-cutting platforms:

The BeAngels network (in which we have a 60% stake) brings together project owners and private investors capable of providing seed capital as well as support and strategic advice.  The structure generates, on average, 40 financing transactions per year, provides many practical services to entrepreneurs, and plays an important role in the Belgian system of start-ups.

EEBIC is also a founding shareholder of Look & Fin, the biggest crowdlending platform, which allows anyone who so wishes to lend money to project owners. Since its creation, it has loaned almost €70m to entrepreneurs.

High-tech and digital sectors

From the gene therapies of Bone Therapeutics to the holographic digital microscopes of Ovizio, over the collaborative logistics of Shippr and the HR platform of ProUnity: the various financing vehicles managed by EEBIC often involve multiple sectors, but all share a cross-cutting focus on leading-edge technologies and digital innovation.
